Reel Truth: American Coup Wilmington 1898
The National Center for Civil and Human Rights presents Reel Truth: American Coup Wilmington 1898. The documentary confronts the long-suppressed truth of a white supremacist coup and race massacre designed to dismantle Black political and economic advancement. Through deliberate violence and systemic erasure, Black communities were stripped of hard-won power, reshaping Wilmington and the nation for generations.
Following the screening, documentary producer Brad Lichtenstein examines how these buried atrocities were uncovered by descendants and scholars, and why that recovery of truth matters now. His discussion draws direct connections to the Center’s newest exhibition, Broken Promises, revealing how the legacy of Wilmington 1898 is not an isolated past, but a recurring pattern in American history.
